The Business of Recycling

We continually evaluate the recycling infrastructure in the communities where we operate and support large- and small-scale recycling projects that recover packaging and integrate it back into our system.

In North America we received the National Recycling Coalition's (NRC) 2008 "Recycling Works" award, recognizing our Company's goal to recycle or reuse our PET plastic bottles and aluminum cans, for our commitment to sustainable packaging, as well as our investment in recycling infrastructure.

Working with NRC in the United States, we sponsor a bin grant program that supports local community efforts to advance recycling and a national recycling competition among college campuses, called "Recyclemania." The bin grant program provides bins for the collection of beverage containers in public settings. To date, more than 5,000 bins have been awarded to 150 organizations. Recyclemania is a 10-week competition designed to increase campus recycling. In 2007, schools in 42 states participated in Recyclemania, reaching more than 2.2 million students and 500,000 faculty and staff.

We are also investing more than $60 million to build the world's largest plastic bottle-to-bottle recycling plant in Spartanburg, South Carolina, and to create Coca-Cola Recycling (CCR), a new recycling partnership with Coca-Cola Enterprises, advancing cost-efficient solutions for reclaiming used beverage containers in North America. Once in operation, the new recycling plant will produce approximately 100 million pounds of PET plastic for reuse each year.
